The movie follows the story of Henry DeTamble (Jake Gyllenhaal), a high school science teacher who is struggling to connect with his students. His life takes a dramatic turn when he receives a mysterious, ancient-looking book that once belonged to his missing father. The book contains a map that supposedly leads to the center of the Earth.
