In many cultures, including in Thailand where the term "ladyboy" is commonly used, there is a long history of fluidity in gender expression. Traditional Thai culture recognizes a third gender category, and contemporary Thai society continues to be relatively accepting of gender non-conformity compared to many other parts of the world.
